Tides
Facts
Tides are the rising and falling of ocean waters along the shoreline. You may be wondering what tides has to do with Astronomy. Well, that's because tides happen because of the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun on Earth's oceans. This pull causes the water to bulge out towards the Moon, creating high tides. As the Earth rotates, different parts of the ocean experience high tides, creating a cycle of rising and falling water levels, known as the tide.

What are Tides?
Tides are like a secret dance of the oceans. They're the way the water moves up and down along the shore. Sometimes the water comes closer to the land, and other times it goes farther away.
Imagine the ocean is doing a gentle stretch, reaching out towards the Moon in the sky. That's when we get high tides! But as the Earth keeps spinning, the water takes turns stretching towards the Moon and then relaxing back again. That's why we see the water going up and down along the shore. It's like the ocean is taking a big breath in and out!
Why Do Tides Happen?
Imagine the Moon as a big, friendly magnet in the sky, and the ocean water as its friend. The Moon's gravity pulls on the ocean, making it bulge out a little bit towards the Moon. This is why we have high tides!
But wait, there's more! The Earth is spinning around like a top, and that spinning makes the water move around too. So, when the water bulges out towards the Moon on one side of the Earth, it also bulges out on the opposite side. That's why we get two high tides and two low tides every day!
Different Types of Tides
Sometimes, when the Sun and the Moon are in line with each other (like during a full moon or a new moon), their gravity pulls together to make even higher high tides and even lower low tides. We call these extra high tides "spring tides."
But when the Sun and the Moon are at right angles to each other (like during a quarter moon), their gravity sort of cancels each other out, and we get tides that aren't as extreme. These are called "neap tides."

How Tides Can Help Animals
Tides aren't just cool because they make the waves go in and out at the beach. They also help sea creatures know when to eat and sleep! Some animals, like crabs and clams, like to come out and play when the tide is low, while others, like fish, prefer high tide hideouts.
So, the next time you're at the beach, think about the secret dance of the tides and all the amazing things it helps in the ocean!
